Fall Bulk Day 12
I explain how I balance eating clean with eating out and spending quality time with family and friends.
Some fitness influencers make it look like you can eat whatever you want on a bulk. But I’m here to tell you that the vast majority of people won’t have success like that. Not to mention, it’s terrible for your health!
So, how strict am I on a bulk? My general goal is to treat muscle gain with as much diligence as I would fat loss and eat clean at least 90% of the time.
However, it is true that there is a bit more wiggle room during a bulk because the top priority is getting enough calories to maintain an energy surplus. So, it’s generally easier to find ways to eat out and indulge a little more while still hitting your macros.
Here are my nutrition numbers for November 12th, 2023.
Nutrient | Amount |
---|---|
Protein | 227 g (32%) |
Carbs | 335 g (47%) |
Fat | 69 g (22%) |
Calories In | +2,869 |
Calories Out | -2,782 |
Calorie Surplus | +87 (3%) |
For example, we went to dinner with my family, and I was able to enjoy a salmon entree and a beer without missing the mark with my meal plan. I still hit a small surplus, and my macros were reasonably close to the usual percentages.
Of course, I wouldn’t make a habit of eating out every day, or even multiple times per week if you’re really serious about making lean and healthy gains. But don’t feel like you have to live in a bubble and never share quality time over food with family and friends!
My weight actually came down slightly this morning, which could be slight dehydration from the beer or just normal variation. Either way, nothing to panic about.
